Objective: The expression of matrix-metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in the primary tumor is associated with a worse prognosis but little is known at this time regarding the expression in micro-metastasis, the association with circulating prostate cells (CPCs), and outcome. Material and methods: This was a prospective study of men undergoing radical prostatectomy. Bone marrow and blood samples were taken at one month after surgery. Micro-metastasis and CPCs were identified using immunocytochemistry with anti-prostate specific-antigen and MMP-2 expression determined with anti-MMP-2. Pathological stage, Gleason score, and time to biochemical failure were recorded; meanwhile, Kaplan-Meier biochemical failure-free survival and restricted mean biochemical failure-free survival times for 10 years were determined. Results: A total of 282 men participated, 54 (19%) of whom had micro-metastasis but not CPCs (group B) and 88 (31%) of whom had micro-metastasis and CPCs (group C). Men in group C had a higher frequency of MMP-2 expressing micro-metastasis at 63% versus 12% (p<0.001), and MMP-2 expression in bone marrow micro-metastasis was associated with a higher Gleason score (p<0.05) as well as a higher frequency of and shorter time to treatment failure. Also, a 10-year Kaplan-Meier biochemical failure-free survival rate of 0% versus 7.7% (MMP-2 positive versus negative) and a mean time to biochemical failure of 2.6 versus 4.0 years were recorded. Conclusion: The expression of MMP-2 in bone marrow micro-metastasis is associated with a higher Gleason score, the presence of CPCs, and a higher frequency of and shorter time to failure and could be clinically useful for identifying men at high risk of treatment failure.

Objetive: To characterize patients diagnosed with oral epithelial dysplasia and carcinoma in situ, according to their severity, location, age, sex and smoking habits. Materials and Methods: A descriptive study, based on 126 histopathological reports of biopsies diagnosed with mild, moderate, severe epithelial dysplasia and carcinoma in situ, with information regarding anatomical location, age and gender of the patient, recorded in the biopsy reports of the histopathology services of the Faculty of Dentistry of Andrés Bello University and Major University, between the years 2000 and 2014. The dichotomous qualitative variables were described based on percentage and age using the Shapiro-Wilk test, presenting as average and standard deviation, in the STATA 12® program (StataCorpLP, Texas, USA). Result: A similar frequency was found for men and women diagnosed with OED,
53.17% and 46.83% respectively. A mild degree of OED was the most diagnosed in both sexes. The group most affected by OED was between 50 and 69 years old (57.94%) and the most frequent anatomic location was the lateral border of the tongue (34.13%). Conclusion: Most of the analyzed cases corresponded to mild degrees of dysplasia; however, it is important to always carry out a histopathological diagnosis of the lesion, patient follow-up and education regarding risk habits.

Worldwide studies of physical activity and sedentary time have historically under-represented low- and middle-income countries due to the lack of surveillance data. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methods and procedures used for the assessment of physical activity and sedentary time in the Latin American Study of Nutrition and Health (Estudio Latinoamericano de NutriciOn y Salud; ELANS). ELANS is a multicentre, cross-sectional and surveillance study of a nationally representative sample from eight Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Two instruments were used to evaluate different domains and intensities of physical activity and sedentary time: self-reported data and a triaxial accelerometer (model GT3X+). ELANS will generate important self-reported and objective information for the Latin American populations, namely: evidence on the distribution of physical activity and sedentary time across population subgroups (e.g. sex, age, socioeconomic- and educational level). These sets of information will increase the evidence base and can help to inform future intervention strategies in Latin America; self-reported and objective information on physical activity and sedentary time.
